Artist Spotlight: Maegan Michele Severt

Maegan Michele Severt  is a local artist who creates jewelry and dream catchers.

Where are you located? Kannapolis, N.C.

How and when did you first get started in art and why? “I have been artistic and creative my entire life. My uncle and grandmother raised me, and my uncle was an art major. I believe he is where I get a lot of my creativity from.”

“As a young child, I was always drawing, writing and making things out of whatever I could. I particularly liked to use bits and pieces of odd things that people would not typically pay attention to or think of as artistic, and turn them into something beautiful and meaningful – that is the essence of my creation.”

What art form do you focus on and why? “I have always spent a lot of my time in nature and I call the woods my home. The earth is my temple and my muse. I had forgotten about my artistic abilities as I got older, until one day while out in my back yard I decided to take the twine of a rosemary bush and see what I could do with it.”

“A few hours later, with the help of some dental floss, leaves, and feathers I had gathered, with a few beads, I had made my first dream catcher. I set out to buy some deerskin and other materials from craft stores after that and have been making them ever since. I now incorporate a lot of animal bones, crystals, and other things that the earth hands over to be brought to life.”

Where can people see your work? “I have been attending all sorts of festivals for four years now. When it comes to be spring time, I am all about my music festivals. I have just started vending last year at Groverfest Music Festival and will be vending there again this year. I also set up a tent at a local festival in NoDa called Sunday Funday at the Roux!”

What’s the most challenging part for you when you are creating new art and how do you work through it? Also, how many pieces of art do you create a month? “I haven’t really run into many challenges when it comes to creating other than catching up with all of my ideas. I seem to come up with ideas on top of each other and never seem to be able to get to all of them. I do not have much time to create anymore due to being a single mother to a baby girl, full time worker and part time student but I try to make time when I can to have peaceful sessions with myself and balance out from the stresses of daily life.”

What work is your favorite? “It is difficult to say what my favorite piece is that I have done, as they are all so special to me. I would have to say that my favorite piece is still one of the dream catchers that I made last year. It is a large dream catcher with a skull in the middle of it, as well as a smaller one hanging down with some peasant feathers and tigers eye beads. It is for sale in the shop I sell my things at in downtown Concord called the Enchanted Kitchen.”

How have you evolved as an artist? “I have definitely evolved as an artist over the past couple years. You can tell a big difference in my art, and coming from making things out of materials in my yard to what I do now, I am quite happy with my work and progression. There is still a lot I would like to accomplish, and next I plan on starting to make copper wire arm cuffs as well as delve deeper into the rings that I began making last year.”
